Alt-az mounts — quick and intuitive

Two axes move the telescope in azimuth and altitude above the horizon. Operation resembles a convenient tripod head.

AZ suits visual observing and short recordings. Even a motorised tracking AZ rotates the field relative to the camera as it tracks.

Functional schematic, not to scale. Rays and component shapes are simplified; this is not a particular model’s optical prescription.

What is it good for?

Quick sessions, terrestrial and sky observing, public demonstrations and planetary capture with suitable tracking.

Limitations and trade-offs

A normal AZ without extra compensation is not ideal for long deep-sky exposures. Guiding does not remove field rotation.

Check before buying

  • Smooth motion and vibration damping
  • Actual tube weight and length
  • Travel range and tripod collision clearance

Some models support an EQ wedge or derotator; check the actual configuration, not just a GoTo label.

Matching your setup

Add the weight of tube, rings, dovetail, camera, corrector and guider. Allow for tube length and wind, not kilograms alone. Tripod quality, convenient setup and carrying the system outside matter too.

For imaging, assess tracking at your image scale and working load. Plan polar alignment, power, cables and any meridian flip. For visual use, check smoothness and how quickly vibration settles after touching the focuser.

GoTo finds, drives track and guiding corrects errors: these are different functions. None stiffens a tripod or removes every effect of wind.
